ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This outstanding and very rare 3LP box set from Aristocrate (7674/76, French pressings, black/silver label, stereo, booklet included) features Renaud Fontanarosa's sublime rendition of Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello BWV 1007-1012, recorded at the Salle Adyar, Paris in December 1977, produced by Ivan Pastor and engineered by Jean-Martial Golaz. The sound of the cello has often been likened to the human voice and few have made it sing in these Suites as did Renaud Fontanarosa. He is not a reticent player, and his full-throated Bach playing, full of ardor yet wonderfully refined, is truly extraordinary – this is exalted Bach playing by any measure.
Born in Paris in 1946, Fontanarosa, was a pupil of Paul (and Maud) Tortelier, first privately and then at the Paris Conservatoire. He then furthered his musical training with several luminaries of the French establishment – Pierre Pasquier, Joseph Calvet, and Nadia Boulanger. With his sisters – pianist Frederique (b. 1944) and violinist Patrice (b. 1942) – he formed the Trio Fontanarosa, with became active when these remarkable musicians were only teenagers, their first concert given in 1961. They have recorded the Piano Trios of Schubert and Ravel for French Decca, while Renaud and sister Frederique have taped the Brahms Cello Sonatas for Forlane. On the evidence of these superlative Bach Suites, he has been far too little recorded, and one hopes they'll yet see transfer to compact disc.

Suite No. 2 in D minor BWV 1008 – 18:21
Suite No. 3 in C Major BWV 1009 – 20:40
Suite No. 4 in E-flat Major BWV 1010 – 22:05
Suite No. 5 in C minor BWV 1011 – 27:47
Suite No. 6 in D Major BWV 1012 – 28:25
The full-size, 16-page, textured paper booklet (texts in French, German, and English) is superb, with reproductions of Bach's manuscripts, handsome portraits of composer and artist, and extensive notes on the music by Sylvette Millot..
This very rare 3LP box set is not even listed at ClassicalReference.com, Dave Canfield's comprehensive online LP/CD/78rpm database drawn from the archives of Ars Antiqua.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is GOOD. Two corners of the box top are split and there is some edgewear / shelfwear to all four corners, as well as to the spine. However, there are no bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the box remains solid, bright, and quite striking in appearance – overall, still a quite good copy.
The condition of the full-size 16-page, textured paper booklet is EXCELLENT. There is a tiny mark of discoloration near the spine on the front page, a minor bend/crease to the lower-right corner, and a slight wrinkle to the next to last page. However, the pages remain bright, crisp, and free of markings, the binding perfectly solid, the whole very handsome – an excellent collector’s copy.
The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT throughout. I will not say the surfaces are completely silent or flawless (thus, I have not rated it as MINT), but really they are quite close. If you must have an absolutely flawless copy, then do not buy this set. Overall, these LPs rate as truly fine collector's copies.
