Description
Here are two, powerful, trenchant and rare LABOR PROTEST SONGS from the late '40s. Pulling no punches, these records helped to inspire and indeed documented the strikes and protests of those turbulent years.
CHIC 1008 CHARLES McDEVITT SKIFFLE GROUP "THE COTTON SONG" and "FREIGHT TRAIN." This record was made in remote, rural Thomasville, Georgia (near the border with Florida, in the extreme southern region of the state). "The Cotton Song" became wildly popular as "DEM OLD COTTONFIELDS BACK HOME." This may be the first version. EE+
ASCH 346 THE UNION BOYS "HOLD ON" and "HOLD THE FORT, WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED." From the album, "Music for Political Action." This record conjures up images of sit-down strikes, busted heads and scabs! E-.
These records came from the folk music collection of the late HOWARD FELDMAN.
