This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Deutsche Grammophon (139 358, German pressing, white circle label, stereo) features legendary cellist Pierre Fournier in exalted and radiant accounts of Haydn's Cello Concertos No. 1 in C Major Hob.VIIb: 1 and No. 2 in D Major Hob.VIIb: 2, both warmly recorded with conductor Rudolf Baumgartner and the Festival Strings Lucerne at Lem Verkhaus, Zurich – the former on 12 May 1967 and the latter on 17 December 1964.

This is masterful playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the cello will find much to admire here. Moreover, the sound is absolutely first rate.

There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in English, German, and French. The striking cover design is similarly uncredited.

This recording was supervised by Dr. Manfred Richter and engineered by Hans Hermanns.

The lovely cover art reproduces a detail from "Der Musikliebhaber" by Gemalde von Cornelis Troost (1697-1750), held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes by Irmgard Becker-Glauch, provided in both German and English.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is miniscule corner wear, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a truly excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is outstanding – a truly superb collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
