So here's the back story. . . In the 1970s, when a family member was a DJ in Kansas City, one day Frank Zappa dropped by the studio to leave a copy of the recently-released album Over-nite Sensation. After being asked to autograph it, he grabbed the only writing implement in reach, either a pencil or a ball-point pen (?). A Sharpie would have left a bolder mark. :-( The signature is there and authentic. the glare and shadows reflecting off the glass--in every position we tried--presented challenges to capture a clear camera image. We did our best.
The separate original, gently-used, carefully protected 1973 album and its sleeve are part of this offering. The Vinyl is in excellent condition, no visible scratches. VINYL LP 1973 DiscReet MS-2149
A classic rock album, Over-Nite Sensation blends elements of early 70s rock- n’-roll with FZ’s own avant-garde approach. ‘Fifty-Fifty’ is considered one of the brightest moments on the LP. There are six other tracks: "Camarillo Brillo," "I'm the Slime," "Dirty Love," Zomby Woof," "Dinah-Moe Humm," and "Montana." These seven FZ classics later managed to bring a first gold album into his stash. Accompanied by "the Mothers," Frank brought his own inimitable lyrics, funky rhythms, heavy rock guitar, and his typical irreverence or affronts to political correctness.
Zappa assembled an impressive lineup of talented musicians to record Over-nite Sensations, e.g., French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, keyboardist George Duke, trombonist Bruce Fowler, trumpeter Sal Marquez, multi-instrumentalist Ian Underwood, percussionist Ruth Underwood, bassist Tom Fowler, and drummer Ralph Humphrey. Zappa himself performed most of the vocals with a little help from several singers, including the uncredited appearance by Tina Turner and the Ikettes in the last cut. This album preceded his more commercially successful solo work, Apostrophe. As both were recorded with little time off in between, they are similar in sound.
Over-nite Sensation marked a new approach in Zappa’s sinuous musical path and his passionate affair with Jazz-Rock fusion, which originated years before with "The Hot Rats Sessions". He combined music that was harmonically and rhythmically complex with elements of Rock which allowed him to expand his audience without forfeiting any of his musical integrity.
Zappa was inducted posthumously to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1995) and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1997).
