Description
Here is a great find; a beautiful copy of Frank Zappa's "Läther," a very rare four-LP box set in its original pressing (not the remastered version released by Ryko in 1996). All LPs are a beautiful M-; outer box is VG+ with light surface wear. "Hinge" of box is fragile, but not separated. "LAST" vinyl preservative treatment has been used on these LPs. REALLY NICE, and very hard to find. Do not pass this up! A must for Zappa fanatics, and they don't come much nicer than this!
NOTE:
PLEASE CONTACT US AT THE AUCTION'S END FOR SHIPPING TOTALS. THIS BOX SET WILL OBVIOUSLY COST MORE TO SHIP THAN THE AUTOMATIC TOTALS EBAY GIVES FOR LP SHIPPING. THANKS.
Wikipedia entry for this box:
Läther (pronounced "Leather") is an album by Frank Zappa. Produced by Zappa in 1977, the recordings contained in Läther were made between 1972 and 1976. The majority of the tracks were first issued on 4 different individual albums and released on Zappa's Warner Bros. distributed DiscReet Records label in 1978 and 1979. The individual albums are Zappa in New York (1978), Studio Tan (1978), Sleep Dirt (1979) and Orchestral Favorites (1979.) A few smaller parts also appeared in edited form on Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar (1981).History
Before the official Läther release on CD in 1996, the album had been considered one of rock music's great lost albums, considered "the Smile of the Freak Out set."[1][dead link]
There is still a great deal of confusion surrounding Zappa's original artistic intentions for material on the Läther album. Many Zappa fans believe that his original intention was to release the material on 4 individual albums (a total of 5 full-length LP's) as he had delivered the material to Warner Bros. in this form in 1976. The official story given by Gail Zappa when the CD version of Läther was released in 1996 seems to contradict much of the evidence from Zappa interviews and magazine articles from the 1976-1979 period. When the material was first released on CD while Zappa was alive he chose to issue the 4 individual album configuration. Each individual album in the collection had a cohesive and unique style of its own. However, in the Läther configuration the styles were mixed up in a seemingly random way and linked with bits of dialogue and sound effects.[2]
The official story according to Gail Zappa is as follows: the album (Läther) was originally conceived as a four-record box set in 1977. When Frank delivered the album to Warner Bros. Records, the label refused to release it. Zappa asked for a re-assignment of his contract (from DiscReet to Warner Bros.) in order to advance the possibility of being able to do special projects. Warner Bros. briefly agreed before telling him that he owed them four more albums. Zappa reedited the material into the individual albums Zappa in New York, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt and Orchestral Favorites. After releasing Zappa in New York, Warner refused to pay him or to release the rest of the albums.[3]
However Gail Zappa was apparently unaware that all the material on Läther was already completed and delivered to Warner in 1976, a year before Läther was created. There are many holes in the official story. There is no proof that the 4 LP Läther box was ever delivered to Warner, nor would a single 4 LP box have fulfilled the terms of the contract because it would have counted as as one release. In actuality it was the fact that Warner failed to release the 3 remaining individual albums which caused Zappa to conclude that Warner was in violation of their contract. This led Zappa to re-compile recordings from all 4 separate albums (5 full length LP's) into a new 4 LP box set called Läther and begin negotiations to release the package with another record company (Capitol/EMI.) Warner then interfered with these negotiations and threatened a lawsuit.
The next step was that Zappa then took matters into his own hands in December 1977 by playing the entire Läther work on Pasadena's KROQ radio station and instructing listeners to record it.[3] At this point none of the material had been officially released to the public. When Zappa attempted to get a distribution deal with yet another new record company Mercury/Phonogram to release the Läther album, Warner Bros. decided to release the individual albums he had delivered to them in 1976.[3] Until the CD was released, on Rykodisc, Läther was only available on bootlegs which had been sourced either from tapes of the radio broadcast or from copies of the test pressing.[4]

:::A SPECIAL NOTE FOR OUR OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS:::
We will now be asking that all overseas shipments over $50.00 be sent via registered mail, as well as all shipments to Italy!
We apologize for this, but regrettably we have had so many overseas orders become lost in the postal stream that we feel sending these orders via registered mail is the only way to ensure safe arrival, or at least the ability to track lost items. Unfortunately, this means our non-North American customers will have to pay an extra $12.00 for LP shipping in addition to the standard air mail rates for shipping to your area. We are very sorry to have to make this change (we love our overseas customers!), but we were losing quite a lot of money and our customers were not getting their records, which means everybody loses. Again, you have our deepest apologies, but at this point this is the only option we have to deal with this issue. Thanks for your understanding. You can still have us send them via regular airmail if you like, but be aware that we WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE for items lost by the postal service; our feedback shows that we place a high level of importance on fast shipping and good packaging, and we would NEVER intentionally neglect anyone's order. Again, our apologies for this extra expense; we just want everyone to be satisfied and for everyone to have some kind of recourse in these matters.
WE SHIP ON SATURDAYS, ONCE A WEEK.
Note: Winning bidders PLEASE REQUEST INVOICE for shipping costs! Postage rates have changed, and prices vary for gatefold covers, double LPs, box sets, etc! Overseas shipping rates for LP lots usually range from $20-35 dollars due to high weight.
