Description
The original Verve (blue label) records stereo edition of Zappa and the Mothers first double lp. What a wealth of riches this album contains, and the band only improved with each record! The same year produced another terrific lp by them, due to Zappa's intense pre-planning and careful use of studio time and the limited money he had to work with. The first three sides are just terrific, with quite the variety of music and audio experiments. The fourth side, Zappa's least favorite, was released by the (MGM-owned) label without his authorization, as they pulled the plug before he was allowed to even begin the intricate overdubs that he had planned for the album-side-length 'ballet' piece that concludes the records.
As a fan of elaborate liner notes, this album has one of the best gate-fold designs ever, with reams of Zappa-penned comments and info about all kinds of stuff related to the ongoing Mothers project(s). The CD versions of these early Zappa releases can never do justice to the beauty of the full-sized originals; Mr. Zappa was a graphic artist, painter and designer, after all, as well as his many other talents.
As a special bonus, included with this double lp, I have added one of the original cardboard inserts (designed by Cal Schenkel) that was included with their fourth lp (We're Only in it for the Money, 1968) - an hilarious take-off on the almost-identical inserts that were included with the original Sgt. Pepper album by the Beatles.
I happened to have an extra one of these around, and rather than sell it alone, I paired it with this release.
Cover has some wear, as you can see, but is still very pretty, and the gate-fold interior looks terrific - bright white and NO wear. The records are in good condition and not noisy. Definitely played - but not worn out.
Note - this is NOT a "cut-out" copy, the corners are intact!
