Je Suis Vivant, Mais J'Ai Peur
Gatefold Album with Psychedelic cartoon strip artwork by Enki Bilal and Gilbert Deflez
Pathé ?– 2C066-12970
France, 1974
The mammoth sized musical spaced oddity and a truly critical cornerstone of French Psychedelic Rock Pop, this is Jacky Chalard’s masterpiece. Conjuring multiple musical elements such as untethered primitive Funk, supremely drum heavy Jazz rhythms and LSD inflected Psychedelic Rock passages bound together by a bank of dodgy looking DIY electronics, Chalard flexes his over energised creative juices and manages to offer up to his voracious audience the impossible!! Crafting his very obvious talent in France’s premier agit Pop group Dynastie Crisis, Chalard’s use of electronics pushes the dynamics of sound even further into the future. Emerging as he does from a lineage of very fine music makers like Vannier and Massiera, Chalard was perhaps too futuristic in 1974 with lovers of the anti-authoritarian no-no scene and would have to wait several decades for his deserved fan base. After a faithful reissue on Votel’s Finders Keepers some years ago the original gatefold Pathé press is just as elusive, rarely auctioned and still deserves wider recognition than less groovy, more obscure conceptual creations of the early seventies...
