Description

Respighi
Pines of Rome * Fountains of Rome
Fritz Reiner * Chicago Symphony
produced by: Richard Mohr * Recording Engineer: Lewis Layton

RCA Living Stereo "Shaded Dog" LP LSC-2436.

This recording was made from an original triple track stereo master tape embodying RCA Victor's "New Orthophonic" High Fidelity recording technique. Condenser microphones were placed at optimum positions in Symphony Hall, Boston, to insure uniform coverage of the orchestra.
The music as originally recorded on triple track was then produced as a dual track stereo disc by combining the three original tracks under controlled conditions, to insure correct sterophonic balance, maximum spatial effect and ideal frequency range and dynamic contrast.

Record: Mint - (Couple of VERY light paper scuffs - Visually Graded).
Cover: VG (bent corner see picture)

The day dawned sunless and chilly in Chicago. A nor'easter whipped in off Lake Michigan, with a threat of unseasonable snow, to make one of those bleak autumn Saturdays when you set an early alarm just so you can switch it off and go back to sleep. Downtown, however, Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra were scheduled to record the two most popular of Ottorino Respighi's three Roman tone poems: the Pines and Fountains. In tandem they had been performed earlier that week at subscription concerts, with stunning impact, and thus were finely polished for transfer to triple-channel tape.
By 9:20 a.m., 117 musicians had assembled on the stage of Orchestra Hall in familiar concert deployment, had tuned their instruments, and now sat ready for Dr. Reiner's imminent entrance. On shoulder-high ledges, stage left and right, a dozen auxiliary brass players were stationed. Around and amongst their full-time colleagues on the platform below, RCA Victor's engineer and technicians had placed microphones atop slender poles that resembled stalks of bloomless yucca.
Minutes before 9:30, Fritz Reiner made his way to a music stool on the podium wearing professional spectacles and a functional black alpaca jacket. Beneath the stage itself, in a dingy basement storage room, RCA Victor's staff had their equipment set up: two tape recorders off to the side; Lewis Layton's control board and Musical Director Richard Mohr's intercom and score on a table in the center of the room; a pair of matched speakers against the far wall. Mr. Mohr gave the signal, Mr. Layton flicked a switch; upstairs a red light next to the conductor's desk flashed on.

Play it for the music alone, for a masterly performance, for thrilling recorded sound, or for sheer volume to bedevil a cranky landlord - take your choice- but the finished product is rousing Respighi in any decade's list.
