Frontier Ballads by Folkways Records & Service Corp., NY. Folkways was incorporated in 1948 in New York City by Moses Asch (1905-1986) and Marian Distler (1919-1964) to document music, spoken word, and sounds from around the world. Folkways was one of the first record companies to offer albums of what we now consider world music and they were champions of the singers and songwriters who formed the core of the American folk music revival. They grew to be one of the largest and most influential independent record companies in the world. After Asch’s death the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.) purchased Folkways. Smithsonian wanted to save what Asch had collected over his 38-year history with Folkways to preserve and ensure the availability to future generations.
Frontier Ballads, 1954, is a boxed set of two albums with three groups of songs: Immigrants, The Trek and The Settlers, sung by Pete Seeger with 5-string banjo. On the outside of the box is the Album No. FP 5003, however Volume I: Immigrants, The Trek is #FA 2175 (FP 48-5) and Volume II: The Settlers is #FP 48-6. There is a staplebound book with the lyrics, short biography of Pete Seeger and many illustrations. The records are in sleeves that have been bound into the box. Other than the smudge on the lower center cover, everything is in pristine condition. Because the box is unsealed they have apparently been played, but it couldn’t have been often – they are in Mint condition. Payment by PayPal.
