Billed on its hype sticker as "Tom Petty's 1st solo album ever!", this 1989 MCA release marked a turning point: Petty stepping out from under the Heartbreakers banner, though as one promo tagline slyly put it, "solo, but not alone." The not-alone part is key, because this record owes much of its shape to Jeff Lynne, who co-produced alongside Petty and Mike Campbell while adding bass, guitar, keyboards and backing vocals throughout. The result is a session built on trust between longtime collaborators rather than a lone artist's isolation.

Musically, it carries Lynne's unmistakable production polish—clean, layered, warm—wrapped around Petty's plainspoken songwriting. Petty himself is everywhere, stacking acoustic, electric and twelve-string guitars beneath his lead and backing vocals. Mike Campbell does the heavy lifting on the standout playing: his guitar solos, slide work and mandolin give the record its texture and bite, while Phil Jones anchors it all with steady drums and percussion. It's the sound of craftsmen who know exactly what a song needs and nothing more.

For collectors, the original pressing is a satisfying object as well as a listen, issued with a printed inner sleeve carrying lyrics, credits and additional artwork.
