Funkadelic’s 1972 America Eats Its Young LP and the original poster which features the first iteration of the classic Funkadelic logo that the band would continue to use for every album after. Designed by artist Cathy Abel. Somewhat of a p-funk grail. No booklet in this copy unfortunately.
The poster is in beautiful shape, especially considering its age. No rips, tears, holes, or fades. Based on its condition, I assume it’s been safely stored in the LP cover for the past 50 years. There are a couple of warped wrinkles around the center (pictured) which I’ve seen on every one of these I’ve come across. I had a framer flatten mine out before framing and it looks flawless now.
The vinyls are mostly visually graded as VG/VG-. I skipped around each side on my turntable and there are moments of light crackle and a pop/tick for a few rotations here and there. Nothing consistent throughout any side and nothing that comes close to overpowering the music. My honest thought was that they play better than they look.
The cover is also VG/VG- with some seam splitting: 3.5” on front top, 2.5” on front bottom, 3.5” on back bottom, 0.5” corner seam split on top right front cover, and a paper thin 1.5” spine split. Bottom corner of the spine is dented about 0.5”. Two small water drop stains on the front cover.
Not a pristine LP for the audiophile but plenty of room to enjoy Funkadelic during an interesting era. I believe they recorded most of this in Canada. It’s the first Funkadelic album to include Bootsy, Catfish Collins, Frankie Kash Waddy, Garry Shider and Cordell Boogie Mosson. Legendary talent.
