GARRICK’S FAIRGROUND – Mr. Smith’s Apocalypse * ORIG Argo LP * ZAGF 1 (UK, Stereo, 1972)

Happy to present this very rare jazz concept LP – featuring some truly original pieces you’re not likely to hear on mainstream channels!  Along with Michael Garrick, this LP features the fabulous vocal talents of Norma Winstone, Don Rendell on tenor and clarinet and Henry Lowther on trumpet among others.

The outer laminated gatefold sleeve was made in the UK by Robert Stace.  It’s a very strong example with the following signs of age away from a Mint grade: a small patch of wear to both the top and bottom spine corners; very small slight crease on the bottom left corner; couple of ½ cm edge rubs top and bottom and some very faint signs of ring impression front and rear (only if held up to the light) – and that’s about it.  There’s no writing, splits, tears, no real edge wear.  The inside non-laminated gate is just fine – no problems.  No nasty scrapes, dirt or residue.  Strong and vivid spine – slight lean but no rubbing and all text legible. Laminate still maintains the majority of its shine.  Overall a very pleasing copy which grades strictly at EX- (Excellent Minus) – certainly well above average I would think!

The attractive pink Argo jazz series labels are superb – no writing, dirt or tears/damage.  Hard to decipher any spindle evidence – maybe one per side close to the centre hole.  Superb examples of these rarely seen labels!

The medium weight vinyl is in splendid, barely used condition. There is one faint scuff line to Side 1 but for any appreciable marking, that’s about it.  Very nice shine, NO scratches, scrapes, hairlines.  Possibly some slight dust evidence (not affecting the audio at all).  There is a slight edge warp which had no effect on play on my system and I doubt it will on yours.  Visually, in brilliant condition for its 40 years and worthy of a strong, full and true EX (Excellent) grade (many would grade near mint, guaranteed).  As with all my listings, IT HAS BEENCAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays tremendously with NO snap or pops, no clicks, hiss or distortion, loss of clarity/lack of definition.  Possibly the (very) light occasional tick and a little (nearly inaudible) dust static in the super quiet acapella sections.  The play grade at least matches the visual one.  A superb (and challenging) listen!

Presented with its original stereo marked inner, this LP is out on its own for originality and with some sterling playing and singing, it’s a worthy addition to any British jazz collection.

No reserve.
