Today the word legend is much overused. When I was a kid the word legend conjured up visions of Arthurian knights embarking on spiritual quests or Roman, Greek or Norse heroes slaying magical beasts and being tested by their gods. Nowadays people can be termed legends for doing little more than kicking a ball in the back of a net or baking a chocolate soufflé which doesn't sink. By those measuring sticks Gary Moore deserves legendary status but I'm still loathe to use the word. Instead I'd rather label Moore a genius.
To a certain extent Moore's career came full circle when he switched to the blues, his early work with Irish hard rockers Skid Row being as much about blues boogie as unadulterated heaviness. He changed tack for his brief stint with Thin Lizzy before embarking on a series of solid, high octane slices of hard rock which, for all their showcasing of flair and proficiency, gradually highlighted the limitations of the genre. The shift to recording pure blues albums garnered some dissent from long-time followers but was timed perfectly before Moore could be viewed more for his prowess than for the music he was producing.
Bad For You Baby was Moore's last new studio release before his untimely death from a heart attack. It contains nine original tracks plus covers of compositions by Al Kooper and Chicago bluesman J.B. Lenoir and, as you would expect, includes moments of jaw-dropping virtuosity. Yet, apart from on one occasion, the solos never become overindulgent or dominate proceedings. Moore might have been able to wipe the floor with his peers, but the impression given is the songs themselves are as important as proving he'd lost none of his dexterity. "Bad For You Baby", "Umbrella Man" and "Preacher Man Blues" are Moore at his boogieing best, the notes pumping from the guitar with an effortless grace.
Equally impressive are the slower numbers. Moore has always had a knack of squeezing an emotional intensity out of the blues ballad. What could easily become cloying and overly sentimental drivel radiates with a passionate truth. "Holding On" and "Trouble Ain't Far Behind" are excellent examples. Only Kooper's "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" outstays its welcome, straying over into schmaltz.
For all the fireworks Gary Moore was a fairly unassuming character, allowing his guitar to speak for him. Bad For You Baby is another in a long line of powerful albums which both cements and enhances his already formidable reputation. It's an emotional album, not simply because the blues is an emotional medium, but because this is the last new material Moore would put out under his own name that he himself felt worthy of release.
The man was a genius and is much missed.
