Original Peter King Lathe-Cut double LP Precious Metal (1.1.1.2-2.1.2.2) released by Michael Morley (Gate), in a signed and numbered edition of 20! This is #15/20. Signed and dated 7-1-97 on the insert. NEVER PLAYED - MINT! Cover is silkcreened and the spine lettering is done by hand.

This LP-only release marks a drastic turn in direction for New Zealand noise artist Michael Morley. With his Gate solo project and as a member of the group Dead C, he spent the '80s and '90s deconstructing rock music by trying to turn it inside out. After a series of albums in a feedback guitar mode on Table of the Elements, this release is his first foray into abstract breakbeat electronica. At times recalling the '90s Mille Plateaux groups Gas and Techno Animal while at others appearing as a computer-constructed equivalent of the avant rock of his previous work, Lavender Head is an interesting album, full of fuzzy breakbeats and drone textures.

The first two sides recall The Dew Line, the same stark, downer tone. Something I kind of think Gate produces well. This may once have been techno but it's now reduced to a barely functioning pace of massive drones, hazed rhythms, machine noise and tone-burst "beats." Unlikely to get much of a twitch out of the punters at the local club although record two might, especially the fracturing reconstruction of techno on Mary and Mars. This is wonderful, ignoring all the genre boundries that make techno so limited and just kind of messing them all together. The other side starts with woozy backwards samples, they make their own sense as they progress; you'll understand once you listen.
