More than half a century on, 'Let's Get It On' is still an immediate mood changer and one of the best sonic come-ons we know. Marvin Gaye wasn't just making a sex record, though, because he was in actual fact working through childhood trauma, spiritual conflict, and a marriage falling apart, yet managed to wrap all that in some of the smoothest grooves ever committed to tape. Aside from the title track, classics are everywhere - 'Distant Lover' aches in a way pure lust never could, and 'Come Get To This' has a cheeky swagger to it that is like a playful wink across a crowded space, while 'You Sure Love To Ball' is smoochy, seductive jazz soul that is tender and unguarded. Though overly sensual on the surface, there is plenty of vulnerability underneath that makes hits record endure.
