GENE VINCENT Bluejean Bop 1956 LP Capitol T764 Scranton 1st Press Mono VG Plus

Item Overview & Historical Background

Up for auction is an authentic 1956 original US Mono first pressing of Bluejean Bop! by Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps (Capitol Records, T-764). Released in August 1956, this landmark debut LP was recorded at the legendary Bradley Film & Recording Studio in Nashville under producer Ken Nelson. Coming right off the massive success of "Be-Bop-A-Lula," Vincent was at an absolute peak in his early career, channeling raw, uninhibited rockabilly energy while living on the edge of stardom—all while performing in intense pain from a severe motorcycle accident that left his leg in a metal sheath.

The album captures the original, short-lived lineup of the Blue Caps in their finest hour:

  • Gene Vincent: Lead Vocals

  • "Galloping" Cliff Gallup: Lead Guitar (whose blazing, fingerpicked licks became the blueprint for rockabilly guitarists for generations)

  • "Wee" Willie Williams: Rhythm Guitar

  • "Jumpin'" Jack Neal: Upright Bass

  • "Be-Bop" Dickie Harrell: Drums

Critical Acclaim & Success

Widely regarded by critics as one of the most fiery, authentic, and essential debut LPs of the 1950s rock & roll era, Bluejean Bop! stands toe-to-toe with Elvis Presley's debut album from the same year. Music critics routinely praise the record for its tight "live band" feel, combining raw, high-tempo rockabilly numbers with Vincent’s hauntingly tender vocal style on re-imagined pop standards. The title track became a Top 20 hit in the UK and a charting US single, cementing the album as a cornerstone of 1950s rockabilly history.

First Pressing & Matrix Identification

This is a confirmed 1956 US First Pressing, featuring the original solid turquoise/teal Capitol label with silver printing and "LONG PLAYING" along the bottom rim (discontinued by Capitol for pop/rock LPs in 1958). It was pressed at Capitol's flagship Scranton, Pennsylvania facility, as verified by the stamped "Anvil" / "Lathe" symbol in the dead wax on both sides.

Condition Description

  • Vinyl Grade: Strong VG++ (bordering on Excellent). Retains high original factory gloss across both sides. There are a few light, superficial surface scratches, but they are purely cosmetic and do not interfere with playback. Audio playback is fantastic, crisp, and powerful—delivering that punchy 1950s mono mix with incredible drive and minimal, light background surface warmth.

  • Jacket Grade: VG+. Vibrant front cover graphics with excellent overall eye appeal. Shows light surface rubbing and mild edge wear consistent with a 1950s jacket. The seams and spine are intact with no major split damage, with the single exception of a neat 1-inch split along the top edge.
