If Genesis truly established themselves as progressive rockers on Trespass, Nursery Cryme is where their signature persona was unveiled: true English eccentrics, one part Lewis Carroll and one part Syd Barrett, creating a fanciful world that emphasised the band's instrumental prowess as much as Peter Gabriel's theatricality.
Which isn't to say that all of Nursery Cryme works. There are times when the whimsy is overwhelming, just as there are periods when there's too much instrumental indulgence, yet there's a charm to this indulgence, since the group is letting itself run wild.
Even if they've yet to find the furthest reaches of their imagination, part of the charm is hearing them test out its limits, something that does result in genuine masterpieces, as on "The Musical Box" and "The Return of the Giant Hogweed," two epics that dominate the first side of the album and give it its foundation.
If the second side isn't quite as compelling or quite as structured, it doesn't quite matter because these are the songs that showed what Genesis could do, and they still stand as pinnacles of what the band could achieve.

LABELS: The labels are clean and bright with no real spindle traces to be seen on Side Two and only a handful on Side One - this copy has seen little play - EXCELLENT++
VINYL Visual: The vinyl itself still retains a deep, glossy sheen with just a few light marks/hairlines but these have very little audio consequence (see detailed audio assessment below) - EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: The sound quality is sensational throughout with a crystal clear, deep, rich, detailed, strong sound and on playback at a very loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always a great pleasure to return to this one) there are no jumps, no sticks, no scratches and only some intermittent light background 'ticks' (none which rise above background level and nothing I found at all intrusive). The whole LP plays beautifully with great clarity, no distortion and no groove-wear and is critically graded a very strong EXCELLENT for audio - very nice copy indeed
SLEEVE: The original outer textured gatefold sleeve is clean and unmarked with just some storage rubbing to the bottom spine corner (please see close-up photos) but otherwise, a beautifully preserved example of this easily worn sleeve - EXCELLENT
