Genesis : Selling England By The Pound A-1U / B-2U 1st Press Large Mad Hatter w/ Green Card Lyric Insert
This first pressing on the large Mad Hatter label plays with excellent quality and only minimal intrusion. Some light static here and there but it is always very quiet and there are no clicks or pops. Overall the clarity of sound is very impressive and a complete track by track grading as always is given below.
The cover is in superb condition (a rarity!) with only a couple of minor marks on the front cover. It has been so well looked after and has retained its original shape and structure perfectly. The green card lyric insert is in fantastic condition and the original inner sleeve is in excellent shape also.
This first pressing has the large Mad Hatter labels and the B&C credits on the labels. The cover has the B&C 37 Soho Square address on the back and it is printed by E.J. Day. The dark green lyric insert is made with very thick card - it is thinner on later issues.

Visual description
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still holds a strong glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can see a small number of faint hairlines and only a very minimal amount of minor mottling, a couple of small sections. There is no groove or surface wear and the run outs are very clean also. The large Mad Hatter Charisma labels have no marking, just some spindle wear.
Play Grading
The vocal intro on 'Dancing With The Moonlit Knight' plays with sublime clarity and the second verse is equally as good. A hint of static in the background but so so quiet and barely noticeable. The brief instrumental bridge is perfect and the next vocal has no background. Hackett's instrumental is so clean and the Young man... verse is superb with zero intrusion. The first louder vocal is flawless and the powerful instrumental could not play any better! The power and definition of the audio is so impressive and there is no distortion on the top end. Tremendous depth also. The final vocal section again has no background and the following 'loud' instrumental is 'as new' for sure. The quieter end instrumental plays very clearly with only a smattering of light statics at the near the start but nothing intrusive. The remainder plays with stunning clarity and barely any background. The vast majority here is Near Mint at the very least with only the end section grading as Ex+
The build up intro and spoken 'verse' on 'I Know What I Like...' play with stunning clarity and the first actual vocal has no background either. The chorus is flawless - each note so clean and succinct and it continues in the same exact manner. Every vocal and instrumental section play with impeccable quality and 'as new' is an honest appraisal of the audio. The closing instrumental / fade out is a case in point - superb sound! Mint all the way.
The piano intro on 'Firth Of Fifth' has only a small number of ultra quiet statics and the opening two verses play with great precision and warmth, no interference at all. The quieter third verse has one very quiet tick, no issue, and then the gentle flute section plays beautifully. The following piano section has only a couple of very quiet static ticks and the instrumental then plays with STUNNING accuracy! The power, depth and resonance of the audio is outstanding and Hackett's solo section has no interference. If there is any inner inner groove distortion is kept to an absolute minimum. There is a little on the final vocal but no actual interference and the closing piano piece is more or less perfect. Overall this ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint but more of the latter I would say.
'More Fool Me' ends the side with very clean audio. The intro has just the quietest hum imaginable in the background which persists and Collins' first verse has only a couple of light statics at the beginning. The chorus plays with great clarity and the remainder is much the same. I'll say Ex+ overall but there are certainly no ticks, clicks or pops to contend with.

The marching intro on 'The Battle Of Epping Forest' has barely any background and the opening vocal is close to perfect with just one very quiet tick. The first chorus is 'as new' and it continues in much the same way. The clarity and definition of the audio is phenomenal - admittedly there is a couple of seconds of light static at the beginning of the They called me the Reverend verse but aside from that this section is faultless. The second chorus has just one very quiet tick, you could easily miss it, and the next unique verse from Gabriel has no intrusion. The instrumental bridge / next verse play perfectly and there is only a hint of very light static during the instrumental that follows, a couple of seconds at most. The final vocal has a couple of light ticks and the closing instrumental is perfect. This is another track that ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint in my opinion.
The opening section on 'After The Ordeal' has the bare minimum of light static and it does not last long. From then onwards it plays very clearly, there is very little background. Hackett's section has only minimal background static and the fade out is very clean with hardly any static. Ex+ overall.
The intro on 'The Cinema Show' has only a little background static which is not intrusive and the opening two verses play very clearly with no obvious background. The third verse is superb and the following instrumental has only light background static here and there. The na na na vocal section has no intrusion and the repeated third verse is very close to perfect. The classic instrumental then plays with stunning quality, sonically it could hardly be any stronger. As the volume increases the playback is so strong and clear and it builds in sublime fashion. You can see why it became a firm live favourite for years. Banks is in full flow here and the 'sound' is fantastic. The quiet end section has only minimal static and I will grade this classic as ranging between Ex+ and Near Mint which is a fair assessment I think.
The acoustic segue into 'Aisle Of Plenty' is very clean with minimal static and the solitary verse is very similar. One slightly louder static tick towards the end. The brief instrumental plays with great clarity and the closing 'vocal' has barely any background. Let's say Ex+ but it's certainly a very strong finish.
The Cover, Lyric Insert & Inner Sleeve
The E.J. Day cover is for once in lovely condition with very little wear. The edges and spine are incredibly clean and the corners have next to no wear also. The opening edge is immaculate and the only issue with the front cover is a small faint mark in the lower right corner and a couple of spots near the bottom edge. The back cover is stunning with only a couple of tiny faint spots. A fine example - not bad for 52/53 years old!
The thick dark green lyric insert is near perfect and I'm sure many would indeed say perfect. One tiny corner rub maybe and a white print mark at the top of S1, you can't really term it as wear. There is no creasing anywhere. The original plain white die-cut inner sleeve is in great condition also with no side splits or tears, very little creasing and only a couple of minor marks.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
