Genesis The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.  1974 Charisma CGS 101 .

I’m offering for sale a totally original first pressing of this LP complete with the extremely rare red competition inner only placed inside the very first run of this LP.  The competition inner is particular to this LP because the catalogue number CGS 101 was stamped on all copies of the inner in the bottom right hand corner – see photos.  The LP was issued in Nov 1974 and the inner states that the competition closes on 1.1.75 so those buying this LP would have had to hurry to submit it on time!  The record has the matrix codes 1 A-2U ; 1 B-2U ; 2 A-2U ; 2 B-2U importantly with the Marketed By B&C Records credit on the Label, which for this LP came before the later Manufactured and Distributed Credit that is sometimes found on this LP.  Totally original and in nice condition.

If, like me, you are fed up with seeing this LP advertised as “an original first pressing” on ebay when it has blue labels or phonogram credits or a credit for manufactured and distributed by B&C records or a sleeve manufactured by Robor, or any combination of these then * look no further * and be assured this is the genuine original.

Condition:  Gradings are per standard UK Record Collector guidelines.

Outer Sleeve: EX

Manufactured by Bruin BV signifying an original UK first release. Overall the condition of the sleeve is really nice. This sleeve is typically found with ring wear and dirty marks due to its pale colour, but this one has been cared for extremely well.

The covers are very clean and display no notable marks, rips stains or writing. There is almost no perceptible ring wear which is normally very noticeable on most copies this LP.  The sleeve only has general minor wear, mainly in the form of a few short creases on each edge.  These are only noticeable when held up to light and do not detract from what is overall a nice copy of this sleeve.

Record Inners: VG- to EX+

Original heavy duty thick card inners which are a feature of an original first pressing. There is a 1cm overlap at the opening to each inner and this is only present on the original pressings.  On later Phonogram releases the opening is level on both edges.

The condition of the two inners is somewhat different.  I grade inner 1 (this would house sides 1 and 2 of the LP’s) as VG- to VG it has a moderate amount of yellowing and foxing which is general to both sides.  There is also a small narrow surface tear about 5cm in length the lower section of one side, but this is below the text and has not removed any of the lyrics as such.   The inner for record 2 is in much better condition and does not have any yellowing or other marks.  This inner is EX+

Record Labels: EX+, a very small amount of spindle wear is visible under strong halogen light.

Records: EX- to EX+

Nice condition vinyl on both LP’s. Record 1 is EX to EX+ with minimal wear just a couple of very faint hairline marks. Record 2 has clearly been played slightly more and grades as EX-.  It displays more general light marking on both sides.  I would note that when I first obtained this copy that record 2 was incorrectly stored inside record inner 1 and hence from my descriptions you will note that these items grade lower that the other LP and inner sleeve.

Competition Insert:   EX+. Tiny amount of wear to one corner but this is very minor.  The entry form itself is unused. It notes that the competition entries must be submitted by 1st Jan 1975.

Overall a really nice original copy of The Lamb which is generally EX and complete with the extremely rare competition insert.
