Description

Artist:   GEORGE WALLINGTON QUINTET

Title:   “George Wallington Quintet at the Bohemia”

Label:   PROGRESSIVE ~ PLP 1001.  Monaural pressing on medium thick vinyl.  Labels are red and white, with deep groove.

“RVG” is etched in the runout groove on both sides.

Year:  1955

Personnel:

George Wallington – piano

Donald Byrd – trumpet

Jackie McLean – alto sax

Paul Chambers – bass

Art Taylor - drums.

Condition:

DISC:  Vinyl is nice VG/VG+ with full original gloss.  Has been played a small number of times, but was handled somewhat carelessly as there are several stray scuff marks that are a cosmetic issue but do not greatly distract from the listening enjoyment.  The most serious of the marks is on Side 1 Track 1, where there are some audible ticks, but no clicks, pops, skips, or jarring ticks.  I have included sound clips of the first two tracks on both sides so you can judge the listening experience for yourself.  I find the entire album to be enjoyable, especially given the extreme rarity.  As with all my records, your satisfaction is fully guaranteed.

JACKET:   Jacket is nice VG+.   Laminated front panel is clean, with just some slight discoloration around edges.  Nice seams and a bit of chipping at the top of spine.  Reverse has some darkening and shelf wear, but otherwise clean with no writing or stickers, or cutout indications.  Overall a very decent and respectable jacket to accompany the rare disc.

Track Listing

Side One:

  • Johnny One Note
  • Sweet Blanche
  • Minor March

Side Two:

  • Snakes
  • Jay Mac’s Crib
  • Bohemia After Dark
  • The Peck

Review:

“This live set, although led by pianist George Wallington, is most significant for giving listeners early examples of the playing of trumpeter Donald Byrd and altoist Jackie McLean; bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor complete the quintet.  The music, although comprised mostly of group originals (other than "Johnny One Note" and Oscar Pettiford's "Bohemia After Dark"), is essentially a bebop jam and it is particularly interesting to hear just how much McLean was influenced by Charlie Parker at this point (although his sound was already quickly recognizable).  This was a solid if short-lived group and their brand of hard bop will be enjoyed by straight-ahead jazz fans.”
