George Winston's December is one of the defining solo piano recordings of the early 1980s — a spare, meditative collection of original compositions and traditional carols that became Windham Hill's signature album and one of the best-selling piano records ever made. Thanksgiving, Carol of the Bells, Night, and Variations on the Kanon by Pachelbel are among the highlights across both sides.

This is an original U.S. pressing on Windham Hill Records (WHS C-1025) — the early independent pressing series, issued before A&M Records began distributing the label in 1983. The WHS-C series is regarded by Windham Hill collectors as the preferred pressing of these titles.

The recording was made direct to two-track using a Studer A80 half-inch recorder at 30 inches per second. No noise reduction was employed. The signal chain from tape to lacquer is as clean as it gets.

Lacquers cut half-speed by Jack Hunt at JVC Cutting Center, Hollywood — confirmed J.H./2 on both sides. Hunt was chief engineer at JVC Cutting Center from 1980 and cut half-speed masters for Mobile Fidelity, Direct Disc Labs, Nautilus, and numerous original label audiophile releases of the era. Half-speed cutting gives the lathe twice the time to carve the groove, resulting in extended high-frequency response, lower distortion, and a quieter groove wall.

Plating by Sheffield Lab Matrix (SLM) — confirmed in the deadwax on Side One. Metal parts supplied by SLM, pressing by Record Technology Inc. (RTI), Camarillo, CA — both credited on the back cover and confirmed in the matrix.

The vinyl on this copy is translucent — visible when held to light, an amber/brown cast throughout. Documented on this pressing. Not a defect — a characteristic of the vinyl compound used at RTI on these early Windham Hill runs.
