GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED

Copertine e vinili sono visualmente gradati dopo un’attenta osservazione sotto la luce del sole fatta sulla mia terrazza a tetto. Nelle giornate grigie il controllo viene effettuato sotto una forte lampada alogena con l’aiuto di una lente d’ingrandimento. Tutti i dischi in asta sono stati interamente ascoltati, i 33 giri su un giradischi Rega Planar 3 fornito di una testina a magnete mobile Grado Statement 1 mentre gli EP e i singoli a 45 giri con un Thorens TD 166 BC fornito di una testina, sempre MM, Goldring 1006. Ritenendo che le abituali classificazioni quali Mint, Ex, Vg, ecc., ecc… siano poco significative per spiegare le reali condizioni dei dischi ed anche estremamente soggettive, precedo sempre tali classificazioni con una breve descrizione degli eventuali difetti che ho riscontrato, ad eccezione di Mint- che il più alto grado che conferisco a qualsiasi disco. Soltanto per le copie ancora sigillate all’origine utilizzo MINT/MINT.

Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All records in auction have been fully heard. Lps on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with a Grado Statement 1 moving magnet cartridge, EPs and singles 45 rpm. on a Thorens TD 166 BC turntable with a Goldring 1006 MM cartridge. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.

Note : si poteva dare per scontato che trattandosi di un film che per lo più si svolge in Cina, girato pure in Hong Kong oltre che a Berlino, la musica che accompagnava la sua trama avesse almeno in parte un tocco orientale. Non è così e questo, a mio avviso, è un grande merito di Garvarentz: non c'è niente di peggio che ascoltare la scimmiottatura di una tanto nobile musica solo per esigenze cinematografiche. L'impegno del compositore Armeno è poi encomiabile sotto tutti i punti di vista: scrive una magnifica canzone che Dusty Springfield interpreta splendidamente (a1), alterna temi classici ad atmosfere drammatiche e angoscianti ed al jazz con una grinta impressionante che i suoi musicisti recepiscono alla perfezione. Fra le tracce: "The Gambling-Den" (b2) buon brano jazz caratterizzato da un ottimo assolo di tromba con pianoforte in sottofondo. Quest'ultimo a sua volta si esibisce in un magnifico assolo. "Man-Hunt" (a3) è brano molto frenetico con l'orchestra che accelera fortemente i movimenti, "The Mortuary" (a5) tema drammatico dall'andamento lento in cui aleggia un'atmosfera di mistero così come in "Torture Room" (b4) o in "Illusion and Escape" (b6). Ottimo assolo di tromba con pianoforte in sottofondo anche in "Jasmine's Dance" (a4).

Notes : one could assume that being a film that mostly takes place in China and filmed in Hong Kong as well as in Berlin, the music that accompanied its plot had at least in part an oriental touch. It is not so, and this, in my opinion, is a great merit of Garvarentz: there is nothing worse than listening to a mockery of a so noble music  only for cinematic needs. The scrupulousness of the Armenian composer is also praiseworthy under all points of view: he writes a nice song beautifully performed by Dusty Springfield (a1), alternates the classical themes to distressing and dramatic atmospheres and to jazz with an impressive determination that his musicians absorb perfectly. Among the tracks: "The Gambling Den" (b2) good jazz music characterized by an excellent trumpet solo with piano in the background. The latter in turn performs a beautiful solo. "Man-Hunt" (a3) is a very hectic track with the orchestra that strongly accelerates the movements, "The Mortuary" (a5) a dramatic theme on the slow development wherein hovers an atmosphere of mystery as well as in "Torture Room" (b4) or in the "Illusion and Escape" (b6). Great trumpet solo with piano in the background also in "Jasmine's Dance" (a4).
