Here's How it was done ON 45 SPEED VINYL:

Using only the original analog master tapes, the renowned team of Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray remastered and cut all of the titles at AcousTech Mastering, which features a pure Class-A disc-cutting system. AcousTech is located at Record Technology, Inc. the plant where the vinyl was pressed. It is a tremendous sonic advantage to have the pressing plant plating department & mastering room in the same facility as Steve & Kevin could cut a lacquer and plated immediately. This prevents the degradation of the grooves in a lacquer which is very fragile to quick deterioration.

And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music.

This is the ultimate reissues. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session.

Three decades ago, when Riverside paired Thelonious Monk and Gerry Mulligan on this album, it seemed a daring move. These two appeared to represent opposite ends of the jazz spectrum, separated by geography (East Coast and West) as much as by style (bop vs. cool).

Actually, it was a rather safe project: producer Orrin Keepnews had learned that the two men were friends; even more importantly, it is now clear that both were the kind of revolutionaries who had substantial (and not dissimilar) respect for jazz tradition. The album was, as advertised, a meeting of giants, but its most lasting value may be as proof that there was a strong bond connecting theoretically opposing forms of early modern jazz.

Mulligan and Desmond meet in an event both they and the world of “cool“ jazz devotees had yearned for. Gerry Mulligan began 1953 with these four sides featuring Chet Baker on trumpet, no piano.  It was to be a big month for Mulligan.  Within four weeks after these renditions, he had recorded two dozen classics by his Quartet and Tentette.

Lady is a Tramp and Turnstile back to back on a 78 RPM single got strong airplay on the West Coast.  Baker is superb throughout as is drummer,Chico Hamilton. 

Paul Desmond's debut as a session leader came with these recordings from two dates in the Fall of 1954.  Desmond, bassist, Bob Bates and drummer, Joe Dodge, were three-fourths of the Brubeck Quartet; San Franciso based David Van Kriedt (tenor sax) and Dick Collin (trumpet) play on a couple of the tracks.  Guitarist Bernie Kessel and the singers join in when Desmond, Bates, and Dodge recorded the rest of these titles in L.A.

Desmonded recorded under his own name only twice more in the fifties with a pianoless group.

GERRY MULLIGAN PLAYS MULLIGAN - GERMAN PRESSED BY PRESTIGE/FANTASY RECORDS 1982 EDITION - These 1951 recordings were Gerry Mulligan's first as a leader, and they're testimony to his skills as both a composer and an improvising soloist. Five charts for a nine-piece group expand on the kind of work Mulligan had done on the Birth of the Cool sessions two years earlier, though here he develops some darker ensemble textures with the use of two baritone saxophones. As a composer, Mulligan was already a master of subtle voicings, and he coupled them with tunes that could generate an easy swing. The concluding "Mulligan's Too" is a 17-minute blowing tune with strong solos by Mulligan and Allen Eager, the latter making positive use of the influence of Lester Young on the era's younger tenor players
