Houston rap pioneers Geto Boys had already built a fearsome reputation by the time this 1991 breakthrough arrived, but this was the point where their sound fully tightened into something heavier and psychologically stranger. 'Mind Playing Tricks On Me' remains the obvious centrepiece, its slow Isaac Hayes-derived groove giving Scarface, Willie D and Bushwick Bill room to unravel stories full of exhaustion and creeping paranoia. But there's plenty else here that still hits hard. 'Chuckie' is gruesome horror-rap done with genuinely queasy detail, while 'The Other Level' rides thick low-end pressure and clipped drum programming that still sounds massive today. Even the more playful moments carry a nasty edge. It's gangsta rap with the air sucked out of the room.
