GIL MELLE “Patterns in Jazz” Blue Note 1517, RVG, DG, Frame, Mono Vinyl
This is the first edition, 1956, “RVG” etched, Deep Groove, Flat Rim, Frame Cover, “P” pressing of GIL MELLE’s “Patterns in Jazz” on the "767 Lexington Ave" labels of Blue Note BLP 1517. Musicians include Gil Mellé, Eddie Bert, Joe Cinderella, Oscar Pettiford, Ed Thigpen.
HEAVY-WEIGHT FLAT RIM VINYL plays with low level surface noise (i.e, static, ?? or ????, relative to the volume of the music/instruments) with occasional ticks or pops (some repeating), but the instruments are very dynamic, clear and strong with clean transients, solid bass frequencies and full tone. Some areas very quiet. No distortion. No skips. Handful of hairline marks, none feelable. Both sides have good gloss. See photos. This disc was pressed OFF-CENTER, causing some longer, ringing chords and solo instruments to dip in pitch. Most noticeable on Side 2. As with all first pressing Blue Note discs, the powerfully recorded and performed music overcomes imperfections. Largely plays very well. The Deep Groove “767 Lexington Ave " labels are clean with a minor spindle marks. See photos. Original inner sleeve included.
FRAME COVER is in good shape, wear, 1” inch tear lower jacket at opening. Corners worn. Spine and seams in good shape—some wear and cracking. 2” split mid spine. Lower seam about ready to split but not yet. “BLUE NOTE RECORDS INC., 767 Lexington Ave., New York 21” back jacket shows some aging, stains, mangled paper at right border. See photos.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end audio system. Record cleaned on VPI 16.5.
