Lesser-known Canterbury treasure featuring ALAN GOWEN and HUGH HOPPER

Like finely tattered lace, GILGAMESH created intricate music that was fluid, mercurial and utterly delightful, its moods flowing from gentle to soaring, yet its power always incontrovertible - decidedly akin in sound and feel to Canterbury compatriots: HATFIELD & THE NORTH. GILGAMESH in fact often clearly exceeded the Hatfields with the masterful, whimsical and blissfully telepathic interplay between all players, though especially keyboard savant ALAN GOWAN and Guitarist PHIL LEE, the 2 primary composers; and here also with HUGH HOPPER, (Soft Machine / Wilde Flowers) who replaced JEFF CLYNE (Centipede, Nucleus, Isotope) on this, the 2nd and last Gilgamesh album.

Two years had passed since the band's debut album, and the group had splintered, with the members going on to other projects. Regardless, 1977 saw keyboardist Alan Gowen begin composing music for a follow-up; he was soon rejoined by guitarist Phil Lee. Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper and noted Canterbury jazz drummer Trevor Tomkins completed the lineup, and work began on Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into.

Floating along like interlocking dream sequences, at-times approaching psychedelia, what's immediately notable about the set is its haunting, quiet center - all-the-more remarkable when created out of complex and ever-shifting time signatures. In lesser hands, the changes would tear the mood apart, but the musical riffs and swells of melodies provide the centering for the pieces, with the rhythms and music sliding and floating like drops of mercury. An excellent set from a highly talented composer and a group of excellent musicians..

GOWAN would go on to found NATIONAL HEALTH with Dave Stewart, but his aggressive Leukemia kept him from the full involvement there that he should otherwise have had. He died in 1981, leaving us far too soon, but leaving us with (too few) amazing musical wonders. This and the previous (debut) Gilgamesh albums are absolute musts for followers and collectors of top CANTERBURY SCENE LPs.

who was a DJ at the Radio Station I co-founded in the 1970's - and who worked for me at my California record store in the '70s and '80s.
Sadly he has now finally left this mortal coil, bequeathing me his deep Vinyl Mine.
