Gimme Shelter is a supreme collection of forgotten funk classics from Harmless Records, the specialists in serving-up rarities from the 60s and 70s.
This time the era's fusion of Black & White, soul & rock, is the source of the ghetto struts. Cover versions are numerous--and given that most of them are by black artists, of songs recorded by white acts prone to mimicking black artists--most outstrip the originals. The Isley Brothers slow-grinding take on Neil Youngs "Ohio" soars with sweet and aching passion, The Deirdre Wilson Tabac add extra sass to The Beatles' "Get Back", while "Gimmie Shelter" itself roars in the hands of Merry Clayton, who sang backing vocals on the Rolling Stones' original. Sly & The Family Stone define funk-rock with the sleazy stomp of "I Wanna Take You Higher"; coming close to being the album's essential track. Ultimately though, that honour is shared by the two mellow offerings: The Loading Zone's horn laden "Can I Dedicate" and the sun-drenched funk of Rotary Connection's "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun"--subsequently covered by Masters At Work for their Nuyorican Soul album. Still, with so many fine grooves to choose from, it's a tough call !
