Here's a really top- drawer Columbia Viva- Tonal 163 tabletop or "suitcase" phonograph.
The faux- alligator skin case is is above- average condition. It does have some weatherchecking and blotchiness that looks worse in the photos than in person. This can easily be greatly diminished with black shoe dye, but I want you to see it at its worst. The wood interior is gorgeous. The brass metal parts are clean and highly polished. To make it sweeter, the machine PLAYS as nice as it LOOKS- Full, brilliant, Viva Tonal sound that plays at room- filling volume without distortion- even WITH a "full- tone" needle on a loud record!
The mechanism runs quietly and smoothly with no speed variation, and no needle- skipping "thumps" as the spring motor runs down.
Those who know phonographs know that Columbia Viva- Tonal machines are up with Victor Orthophonic Victrolas in the top tier of sound quality.
If you want a machine that simply looks nice, and don't care if it's almost impossible to listen to or doesn't work very well, there are plenty out there. HOWEVER- If you want a machine that has looks + portability + the mechanical means and the tonal quality for LISTENING to your 78s, I don't think you can do much better than this cute little workhorse.
