Few albums originally released in 2000 hold up as well as The Sophtware Slump. Grandaddy, who are fronted by Jason Lytle of Modesto, California, made one of the best albums of the century so far with this second studio album of theirs. Lytle went to extremes to access the best parts of his imagination as he holed up in a hot, isolated farmhouse outside of his hometown to record this major label debut and international breakthrough. Among the highlights is the early Muse meets Joy Division of 'The Crystal Lake' - still the radio friendly highlight of their live set today. Elsewhere, the sprawling, expansive and haunting opener 'He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot' was ambitious and daring at nearly nine minutes, but thanks to Lytle's ability to deliver his words like arrows into the listener's heart the track's a captivating success.
