BEAUTIFUL copy of this rare and little known band’s first LP release. Because it was released with a black cover, shelf wear and ring wear were common as the years passed. THIS COPY however, is really in fine shape (both the disc and the cover). Better than any copy that I have personally seen.
HISTORICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE BEATLES / APPLE: (1) John Lennon named the band in 1968, (2) it was put together by Terry Dolan who worked at Apple Publishing, (3) Apple licensed Grapefruit's music publishing rights for the U.S. to a new publishing and recording label being formed by Terry Melcher entitled Equinox, (4) they were the second act signed to Apple Publishing, following the Liverpool group Focal Point, (5) The Beatles continued to take an interest in Grapefruit, with John Lennon introducing the band to the media in January 1968, (6) Grapefruit member John Perry sang on the recording of the hit single "Hey Jude" at Lennon’s invitation, (7) Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr of the Beatles, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Donovan, and Cilla Black attended the press launch of Grapefruit and were photographed with the band with Jimi Hendrix also in attendance, and (8) As a follow-up single, Lennon and McCartney took the band into the studio in January 1968 to record the song "Lullaby" (also known as "Lullaby for a Lazy Day" and originally called "Circus Sgt. Pepper") but the recording was unavailable for release due to The Beatles’ extended stay in India.
HISTORICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE VANDA / YOUNG, THE EASYBEATS, THE MARCUS HOOK ROLL BAND AND AC/DC: (1) Grapefruit bass guitarist George Alexander was born Alexander Young and was the older brother of The Easybeats' guitarist/songwriter George Young (and also of Malcolm and Angus Young, both founding members of the Australian hard rock band AC/DC). Alexander Young had chosen to remain in Britain when the rest of the Youngs immigrated to Australia, (2) After the break-up of Grapefruit, Alexander joined forces with his brother George Young and his songwriting partner Harry Vanda from The Easybeats and, in 1970, (3) they recorded for the Young Blood label as Paintbox and Tramp, (4) Alexander also participated in sessions for Vanda and Young's Marcus Hook Roll Band.
For all of its pedigree, Grapefruit is little remembered today which is a shame as they were a talented psych pop band on this LP and a talented rock band on their 2nd LP ("Deep Water").
