GRAVY TRAIN
"BALLAD OF A PEACEFUL MAN"
Original release album on
VERTIGO RECORDS cat# 6360 051 from 1971
I hardly need to tell you how RARE and highly sought this PROG MONSTER really is, because if you've been looking for a copy you'll already know (or checked it out on the Pop-Sike listings or Pokora books).
It's classic top Progressive Psych of the first degree - with some excellent musical work right from start to finish. Some lovely flute combines with keys, guitar and drums for a wonderful balance of unison, solo, and instrumental harmony works - not too unlike some of the interplay that King Crimson displayed on their best work. The vocals must have been done with rests inbetween each take - as he REALLY goes all out, like a Robert Plant crossed with Klaus Meine from Scorpions!! He's at the top of his art here, and same goes for the band - which is why this record is SO universally rated.
The vinyl is in VG+ condition visually, light marks and scuffs visible but nothing to cause needle skips or loud pops, PLAYING QUALITY is quite decent, the music of course is full-on prog/psych, and it comes across loud and clear. I played this several times using my regular sensitive light needle setting, with no problems whatsoever.
The VERTIGO 'SWIRL' labels are clean VG++/EX condition, no tears stickers or pen.
The cool laminated GATEFOLD Cover is VG++ to EX, also decent. Light wear and handling evident, but still a nice example. The 'Swirl' inner sleeve is here also, and although I don't normally 'grade' inners, it must pass as VG++ too.
Grab this original gem now, these are few and far between now.
Those lucky collectors finding them in the past, don't let go... for good reason!
