London amazer Michael Gray released 'The Weekend' in 2004 after more than a decade working behind the scenes in British house and pop, including chart work with Full Intention and remixes for major labels. By the early 2000s, Gray had grown frustrated with formulaic club music and wrote the track deliberately outside prevailing trends, leaning on a simple piano hook, a live-sounding rhythm section and a gospel-leaning vocal from Shene. It gained momentum primarily through DJ support, eventually making number one in the UK (though some may need reminding). This reissue restores the original extended vocal and 12" mix alongside a later club edit, returning the track to its functional format via Groovin.
