Some info on the release: Extremely rare 70's original private pressing released by a theater in Bremen, Germany to document the world premiere of Hans Kresnik's choreographic theatre Piece Jesus GMBH. Beuatiful gatefold cover, full of pictures and liner notes on the inside. The music can be described as psychedelic experimental electronics full of percussive breaks and will be a big must for fans of library recordings and obscure private pressings. Graziano Mandozzi, the composer of the music has written music for over 250 films and plays, among which the Secret Life of Sergei Eisenstein, The (1987). •, Ich hatte einen Traum (1980), while he dedicated a part of his life to research of the work of Nino Rota and Federico Fellini.
Less known abroad than Pina Bausch, Gerhard Bohner, Susanne Linke or Reinhild Hoffmann, in German culture Hans Kresnik is a familiar and often reviled figure. His dance pieces focus on the troubled side of German history: Rosa Luxemburg, Ulrike Meinhof, Ernst Jünger, German unification (Wendewut). His championing of left-wing positions, echoing ‘1968’, is typically West German; his blending of strident ideological criticism with postmodern forms and dance’s physicality links him with GDR directors like Frank Castorf, in whose Volksbühne Kresnik has regularly directed. His work in the ‘Tanztheater’ (‘dance theatre’) field is a case study for the role of socially and politically engaged dance in Germany, where it is uniquely prominent.
Born in the 1960s as critical successor of 1920s ‘Ausdruckstanz’ (‘expression dance’), ‘Tanztheater’ consciously rejects both classical and postmodern formalism, stressing instead political and social commitment. Kresnik’s work moreover sets him apart from female ‘Tanztheater’ choreographers: it has been characterised and defined by images of rage, insanity, death, deformation, brutal sexuality, anarchy. Where Pina Bausch, for example, dramatises sexual despair, power plays, obsessive patterns of physical and emotional violence between the sexes, to challenge received notions of gender roles and sexual relations in productions which often eschew specific moral stances, Kresnik, in contrast, sees gender domination as part of the bigger (i.e. social and political) picture. He himself abandoned the term ‘Tanztheater’ in 1973, defining his work as ‘choreographisches Theater’ (‘choreographic theatre’). His productions always tell a story (however fragmented) or a biography (however distorted) - they thus move away from received notions of dance to become a veritable theatre of images.
Condition: Vinyl lies in excellent condition, crystal clear and shiny, seems barely played, but plays with light crackle. Cover lies in very good++ condition showing some corner / storage wear (see photo).
