Here's a really nice Columbia Viva Tonal 161 "suitcase" or tabletop phonograph in great "as found" condition. The machine works perfectly and produces dance- hall filling volume with AMAZING fidelity- NO distortion even on extremely loud Jazz records! The Viva- Tonal was Columbia's answer to the Victor Orthophonic- a late model "Grafonola" that was especially engineered for playing the new Electrical recordings. The only "challenges" this great little machine faces are cosmetic. While the padded "snakeskin" suitcase cover is far nicer than usually found, there are some minor spots and a minor amount of fraying on the edges. The "fold away" winder (or crank) is missing the wooden knob. The carrying handle is worn to bare metal. It appears that the turntable felt has been replaced sometime in the past. I believe these machines had a fabric covering rather than felt on the turntable. While the interior cabinet wood is in fantastic condition, the decal is somewhat worn. All of the "gold" plating is tarnished; most should polish fine, but be prepared to find some places where the plating may be worn through. All of these issues are clearly visible in the photos. With some effort, this could be restored to museum quality. As it is, it's a VERY pleasing, cute machine that'll make you grin till your cheeks ache every time you listen to it. the pictures actually manage to make it LOOK worse than it actually does. This machine will be packed securely enough to withstand a small bomb. The lucky winner will be responsible for ALL shipping and materials charge. I don't charge for 'handling'...
