Fully Laminated Sleeve 'Printed and Made by MacNeill Press Ltd.,London'
Original UK Liberty Records Black label issue, initially available on the blue label, and both black and blue formats are equally elusive these days. Fully laminated sleeve, printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd. Released on the Black Liberty Records label, with "a product of Liberty/U.A. Records Ltd" label text. A Stereo recording, the disc comes in its original white "Made in England. British patent no" poly-lined inner sleeve. The band members on this record were:-Tony (T.S.) McPhee, Pete Cruickshank & Ken Pustelnik.
On their debut album ‘Scratchin’ the Surface’, The Groundhogs proved they were a very decent blues band. On this their second album things moved on apace and they quickly proved they were a superb blues-based rock band. This was not a major seller and a real gem that has now been somewhat overlooked and overshadowed by ‘Split’ and ‘Thank Christ for the Bomb’. ‘Blues Obituary’ said farewell to the pure blues sound and this is a high-octane powerhouse blues-based progressive rock classic featuring the one and only "Rev T.S. McPhee" who lets rip throughout with ferocious guitar solos. Note the poignant cover: what appears to be McPhee lying in a coffin with an acoustic guitar – the vicar is the same man and the fact he still has a full head of hair will give away the great age of this album – yes now forty two years old. An elusive album on either black or blue Liberty label – the price guides do not separate for value – this I feel the most difficult Groundhogs album to find and this is a splendid example.
Known primarily as a hard rock / blues rock group, the Groundhogs have become a legend in the world of rock, they never set out to become a Prog rock band though during 1970 - 72 created some imaginative experimental music born from the pen of Tony McPhee, and made much of the band's work interesting material for followers of Prog - social, mindwarp, ecological and psych/space rock themes and unusual instruments found their way into the band's albums made during this their most progressive and arguably most fruitful period, featuring many regard as the classic Groundhogs line-up of Tony (T.S.) McPhee guitar/vocals, Pete Cruikshank on bass guitar and Ken Pustelnik on drums.

Vinyl: EX
(A lovely visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy that hasn't been played many times, in ordinary light the disc appeares near to Mint, under a bright halogen wall light a few light wispy hairlines are visible. This very fine record plays excellently throughout. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is excellent with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no nasty pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing overall and sound is superb. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended)
Labels: Mint-
(Both labels are in near to Mint condition)
LP Sleeve: EX
(A single fully laminated sleeve that was 'Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press'. The Sleeve is in excellent shape, solid, crisp and clean with a few 'wrinkles' on the front and rear and some mild creases near the open out edge. Near the spine there are some small blisters along with several small laminate stress cracks. All text on the spine is fully legible and clear. Overall this is an excellent condition copy of this legendary and morbidly classic 60's album sleeve. Please see pictures)
