Another from my personal collection! An awesome sounding original 1st issued (STEREO UK pressing). Please note! This is not Mint. This is listed for its rarety and collectability rather than for its condition. There is general wear and tear with age and surface marks/scratches and scuffs noted on the vinyl,, which do have some adverse effect on the audio quality but this is still a very enjoyable and playable copy in my opinion. For any of those who know the records that I list on ebay would know my prime interest is the audio quality, I have play tested the vinyl on a top system at very loud volume. This has a true bassey feel and plays through with out distortion. It is noted that there was isolated clicks and light pops, light static crackle heard on both sides, these can be heard in the recording in the player below so that you can make up your own mind. Despite the interference this probably one of the most vibrant pressings that I have heard and very enjoyable in my opinion. The original 1st issue Textured front only, E.Day &co gatefold cover is graded at better than excellent in my opinion. Very 1st issues are rarely seen for sale and very collectable.
Hear the complete album in the player below! Actual recording from the vinyl!
Groundhogs are a British rock band founded in late 1963, that toured extensively in the 1960s, achieved prominence in the early 1970s and continued sporadically into the 21st century
The band was originally formed as The Dollar Bills in New Cross, London in 1962 by brothers Pete and John Cruickshank. Tony McPhee (born 1944), the lead guitarist in an instrumental group called the Shcenuals, joined the group later that same year.
McPhee steered them towards the blues and renamed them after a John Lee Hooker song, "Groundhog's Blues".
John Cruickshank suggested they became John Lee's Groundhogs when they backed John Lee Hooker on his 1964 UK tour: they later supplemented Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Champion Jack Dupree when they toured the UK.
McPhee featured on Dupree's From New Orleans to Chicago (1966) alongside Eric Clapton.
The Groundhogs issued "Shake It" b/w "Rock Me" on the Interphon record label in January 1965.
Thank Christ for the Bomb is the third studio album recorded by The Groundhogs, in 1970, originally released by Liberty Records, 1st issues were released on the blue labels but very few were released with this label variation.
It was engineered by Martin Birch who had previously worked on albums by Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green.
It entered the UK Melody Maker album charts at number 27 on 20 June 1970, and had a total of 3 entries in that chart.
The album sold 30,000 copies in the UK in 1970.
However, it has sold consistently since its release and is cited as a "favourite" or "hugely influential" LP by numerous musicians including Julian Cope, Captain Sensible and Stephen Malkmus.
The final track ("Eccentric Man") has been covered by other bands including Queens of the Stone Age offshoot band The Green Monarchs on Volumes 3 & 4 of the Desert Sessions. Eccentric Man is the title of the definitive biography and discography of Tony McPhee (by Paul Freestone) published in 2012

The Vinyl
On visual inspection this vinyl looks absolutely superbe! The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable! This is the original 1st issue , heavier thicker type of vinyl with deeper grooves only found on these original 1st pressings! They are also more robust than later pressings which were more flimsier! In strong light there are surface marks/scuffs/scratches noted. Some of these do cause noticable static type clicks/ticks during some parts of the audio, noticed on both sides.
The Audio Quality
I have played this through track for track as usual on a top system at very loud volume and the audio is rated very clear and vibrant throughout as I heard it with some clicks as noted earlier and isolated ticks, minor static background crackle heard perhapes in quieter places,in between tracks or intros! Having said that this is still very enjoyable, original and the very earliest to ever find. One of the most vibrant sounding copies of this album that I have heard. This plays with (no) signs of any distortion or that this has been overplayed in my opinion! Audio graded at excellent for the most part in my opinion. Hear the audio of the complete album in the player above and make up your own mind!
Please note! I always make this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd light static/ crackle/clicks/pops as noted earlier in this description cause by the surface marks/scratches/scuffs. Please remember that this is a genuine 46 year old vinyl (not a reissue) that would have originally been played on a 46 year old system!
Please note! This has been stored in a case for at least 40 years! Any static crackle that might be heard during some quiet parts could be minimised by constant cleaning before each play in my experiance!, Build up of dust and dirt that has accumilated over the years from the vinyl being stored! laying dormant causes most of this problem so please allow for some light static crackle as previously mentioned! I would class myself as highly critical ! Please look at my completed listings of records that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normally get it right!
The Labels
This features the original blue LIBERTY labels. (Only 1st UK Press) (no) nasty writing. Spidering can be seen around the spindle hole. This has obviously been played a few times but certainly has not been overplayed at all in my opinion! ''made in England'' text is featured (this is a 1ST UK pressing) little if (no) spindleware the hole is perfectly round! GENUINE 46 YEAR OLD PRESSING!
The Record Sleeve
This is a plain white sleeve without splits or tares! Light creasing staining/fading with age only (see photos)
The cover
The condition of this 1ST ISSUE E.J.DAY & CO PRINTED, TEXTURED FRONT GATEFOLD cover is strong and straight! Lovely and clean for a 46 year old cover , Any rubbing ware with age is minimal. Please note! There are no real nasty creases to talk of any there are you have to look for in my opinion, mainly at the spine edges only.. The writing on the spine can clearly be seen! Please note this is the genuine 1st issue cover (features the CORRECT catalogue number at the rear (see photos)! This is graded at better than excellent in my opinion!HOW I SEND MY RECORDS!
