San Francisco jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi was already deep into his long association with Peanuts by the time he composed the soundtrack for It's A Mystery, Charlie Brown in 1974, though these recordings still carry plenty of loose charm and melodic snap. This expanded edition marks 75 years since the start of Guaraldi's professional career and adds previously unreleased material from the original sessions alongside extra jazz standards featuring bassist Ron McClure. The superb 'Mystery Theme' bounces along on light-footed piano phrasing and playful trumpet lines from Tom Harrell, while 'Sally's Blues' eases into smokier territory with that unmistakable Guaraldi warmth. Elsewhere, 'Joe Cool' swings hard with brassy swagger and 'Cops And Robbers' carries the sort of cartoon sneakiness that made these scores so enduring in the first place.
