Beginning in the mid-'80s, Robert Pollard revolutionized indie rock with ever-evolving 

lo-fi pop created by a rotating cast. Inspired equally by jangle pop and arty post-punk, 

Guided by Voices created a series of trebly, hissy indie rock records filled with 

infectiously brief pop songs that fell somewhere between the British Invasion and prog rock. 

After recording six self-released albums between 1986 and 1992, the Dayton, Ohio-based 

band attracted a handful of fans within the American indie rock underground. 

With the 1994 release of Bee Thousand, the group became an unexpected alternative rock sensation

The first five Guided by Voices releases (their debut EP, Forever Since Breakfast (1986), 

plus full-length albums, Devil Between My Toes (1987), Sandbox (1987), Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia (1989), 

and Same Place the Fly Got Smashed (1990)) weren't widely distributed, and by 1993, there 

was enough interest in the band to warrant a reissue of those records. 

The folks at the German label Get Happy were early supporters -- somehow obtaining copies 

of GbV's early works -- and subsequently acquired the rights for a 17-track compilation, 

An Earful o' Wax. Since it contained a healthy sampling from all five platters (another two 

years elapsed before the appearance of Box, an anthology that included the four LPs), 

the collection itself became highly sought after, as it was just released in Germany, 

and only as a vinyl LP. Even after the release of Box, fans still searched high-and-low, 

if purely for the chance to hear two tunes from the elusive Forever Since Breakfast...(AllMusic)
