12” ALBUM – BANNED SLEEVE

RELEASED BY GEFFEN RECORDS

RELEASED IN 1987

CATALOGUE NUMBER:  WX-125

Sleeve

The original release sleeve that was soon banned due to complaints about the artwork by Robert Williams. This is a stunning looking cover that has been very well care for and remains in near mint looking condition. No creasing, no names, no stickers, or sticker marks. Corners are all sharp with barely any rubbing. The cover is flat, so is the opening edge which is perfect. Sides are also in excellent condition, no signs of rubbing, and no splits. Text clearly visible on top edge and on the spine. The spine is also perfect, text visible, no splits. This sleeve grades a strong excellent plus, which is my highest grade which is mint, mint being a brand new sealed record.

Inner sleeve

The lyric / picture inner is in perfect condition. No writing or sticker, no bad crease and no splits. Really fresh looking and grading an easy excellent. I will also be providing you a plain white inner along with this for shipping purposes.

Labels

Geffen black labels. Both are in pristine condition. No marks, no names or stickers. No spindle marks. This grades a strong excellent plus for both labels.

Side one audio grade

So I’m going to be listening to both sides through and doing my best to highlight the sound quality. “Welcome to the jungle’ is the first track. Nice quiet lead in with no crackle. Song kicks in and the audio is sounding warm and full.  Great mix on this perfectly produced track. That was a great sounding track with no flaws and brilliant audio .”It’s so easy” has a nice quiet lead in before it starts. I doesn’t sound like I’m listening to a record 30+ years old. You can really make out all that is going on with the subtlest of instrument and vocal parts.” Nightrain” , sounded great!! No pops or clicks so far this side. “Out to get me” has no background noise of note as the guitar kicks in, really clean sounding intro. I remember first hearing this album when it was released. It was such a breath of fresh air to rock music, it sounded like a classic from the get go. One of my best albums of all time. Perfect sounding track. I heard some faint crackle between these tracks. “ My Brownstone” is sounding fresh, and just awesome Guns ‘n’ Roses. I noted a little bit of background noise between tracks. The guitars at the start of “Paradise city”  sound clear. Popular track, not sounding overplayed in any way. Stunningly powerful sounding track, and a great one to end the side on.

It’s a common album in general to fall into the overplayed category, it is a just party album after all. That has not been the case with this copy. The quality of audio sounds extremely high throughout. No pops, or clicks. No jumps or scuffs were heard. Never once did I have to get up and move on the stylus. I’m grading this side as excellent.

Side one visual grade

Both sides have a lovely glossy sheen. This looks like a well looed after record. No hard scratches, there are quite a few fine hairlines, sleeve removal marks or cleaning marks. Generally a presentable side. I’m grading it visually as very good. If any marks show up during playback I would have mentioned them above in the audio grading.

Side two audio grade

The intro to “My Michelle” jumps out of the speakers. I did hear some low crackle at the very beginning for a short moment. Once everything kicks in I can’t hear it.  “Think about you” also has a little crackle at the start. I haven’t played this copy for about 15 years, so no doubt a deep clean would raise the grade some more. This track is sounding really good. You really notice all that’s going on in the mix.Guitar at the outro sound ace. Some crackle between tracks. “Sweet Child of mine” . The track itself is sounding clear and in no way sounding overplayed. The solo sounds as classic as ever. I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio, I was like “ wtf is this! – I need to get it!” Sounded great. There was some light crackle between tracks. “ You’re crazy” sounds meaty. Great audio throughout. “Anything goes” starts well, sounds grand and as it should. The gap between this and “Rocket queen” has some crackle.  The tracks intro is sounding fine . The track slowly builds up, the bass stands out a bit more on this track, in the mix that is. For this whole album there has been no break up or distortion at the high and low end. It has really stood the test of time. There were no pops or clicks. I didn’t have to get up and move the arm on. Some mild crackle in parts that a clean might relieve is really all there is to mention. This side sounded really good. I’m giving it a grade of excellent.

Side two visual grade

Again a bright looking side. No hard scratches , numerous fine surface marks, all looking pretty superficial. I think it’s a good looking side, and I’ll grade it very good also.

If any marks show up during playback I would have mentioned them above in the audio grading.

Final thoughts

A great looking cover that shows hardly any signs of wear and tear. Original picture inner, in banned sleeve. Topping that all off with some excellent audio quality I know why I loved this album.

GRADING

I use the U.K Rare Record Guide grading system detailed below.

MINT The LP or single is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT The LP or single shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD The LP or single has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and an occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and contents without any major defects.

GOOD The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
