Description

  • Personally obtained, genuine autograph of the legendary film star Paul Newman.
  • The very detailed story behind this autograph:

From 1980-1989 I was a screening room engineer/projectionist at the ABC-TV corporate headquarters in New York City after spending three years at a live stage venue in NJ. At the time, ABC occupied all 40 floors of 1330 Avenue of the Americas (SE corner of 54th Street). There were several screening rooms in the building, but the primary theatre style rooms were on the 35th, 36th and 37th floors. They contained film projection and video equipment. The amount of programming that was presented in those rooms incalculable!

But, on the evening of April 23rd, 1980 on the 36th floor we had a made for tv film booked titled THE SHADOW BOX. I had just started working there only 9 days before and was told that THE SHADOW BOX is an unusually important screening as Paul Newman directed the film and it stars his wife, Joanne Woodward ... and that they would be in attendance! And so would co-stars Christopher Plummer and Sylvia Sidney. With fair warning (and against professional behavior practices) I chose from my soundtrack collection the album for WINNING, reasoning that it reflected Mr. Newman's love for auto racing and that it co-starred his wife. I was hoping to get both signatures.

On the night of the screening a case of Budweiser beer was delivered to the projection booth (apparently it was Mr. Newman's favorite at the time) and I awaited our guests. When he arrived, I saw the bluest eyes ever bestowed upon a human being. Just incredible. Rather than risking a bad start to the festivities, I waited until the screening was over and everyone was preparing to leave. My co-workers were extremely nervous about me "crossing the line" and asking for an autograph, but it was just too rare an opportunity to be in the presence of such a superstar. I stood outside the projection room door and Mr. Newman and company were inches away. I produced the album (at exactly 9:05pm) cover and gently asked him if he'd mind signing it. He wasn't bothered by it and perhaps he was appreciative of a perfect night in regards to the presentation. He kindly obliged, I thanked him and he rejoined the others as they moved towards the elevators. No Woodward autograph, but I did get the grand prize.

I immediately went over to the 36th floor receptionist's desk, grabbed an ABC note pad, looked at my watch and wrote down the date, place, time and film. I didn't want to forget the details about this wonderful encounter. Below is a detail photo of his signature, which was written with a ball point pen.

  • This cover and record has been in my sole possession. The record itself is VG.
