Description

Pristine condition. Rare recording of Australia's first (possibly only) Aboriginal woman jazz and blues singer. Recorded in 1962, only played once or twice. An important piece of Australian music and Indigenous history.

Georgia Lee was born into a music-minded family in Cairns, North Queensland. She grew up within a musical atmosphere, her big ambition to make the grade as a solo vocalist. So, in 1946 with only a pocketful of dreams, George southed to Sydney. She was soon to sing with Graeme Bell's Jazz Band, Port Jackson Jazz Band, George Trevaire and Jack Brokensha's Groups whilst also working the then famous Cafe Society Gleneagles in King's Cross.

In 1949 she accepted Melbourne offer from Claridges (later the Embers) for a record-breaking 8 months with noted guitarist Bruce Clarke. 1950 commenced a two-year booking at Ciro's Night Club where Bobby Limb also starred. In 1951, with Harold Blair, Georgia scored in the first "Moomba" Show, staged in the Princess theatre.

1953, with the Max Wildman Quintette, starred in Ceylon for five months. Then it was 'London or bust!'

She was praised by bandleader Ted Heath and signed by Harold Fielding to Geraldo. This was 1954. With Geraldo's orchestra, Georgia gave weekly BBC broadcasts and toured the UK.

Over the years she was away she worked with Ray Ellington, was a member of 'The Dominoes' and toured Scandinavia and Europe. In 1957 she returned to Australia and was snapped up by Lee Gordon for a feature spot in the Nat King Cole Big Show.
