ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and very rare LP from German Columbia (SMC 91481, German EMI pressing, white/gold label – ED1, stereo) features Walter Gieseking's wonderfully lyrical account of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major Op. 58, set down at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London on 6 September 1955 with Alceo Galliera and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
This was the third and last of Gieseking's commercial recordings of Beethoven's Fourth Concerto and he brings a lifetime's wisdom and experience to a score that had been a staple of his immense reportoire for more than 40 years. The clarity of his passagework is a marvel, as is his luminous beauty of tone. As he did for Arrau only 5 months before, Galliera leads a bold and sonorous accompaniment – a truly wonderful recording.
Filling out the disc is Gieseking's equally captivating account of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 10 in G Major Op. 14 No. 2, also made in stereo, but at EMI's Studio No. 3, Abbey Road, London, on 19 October 1956.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, the flaws are quite minimal – slight bumping at corners and a minor chip to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and glossy, the striking cover art very vivid – overall, a fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though the surfaces are not always absolutely CD silent, in general the playback is superb – overall, a very fine collector's copy.
