VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'GLASTONBURY FAYRE'
Released in the summer of 1972 with the aim of recouping some of the money lost in on the first Glastonbury festival the previous year, this lavish triple album set features music recorded at that event along with donated contributions from other sources by artists who had played or were sympathetic to the Glastonbury ideal.
This beautifully packaged 3 LP set was designed by Barney Bubbles, with photography from Paul Misso and Gaby Pape, words Mick Farren and cartoons by Edward Barker.
Just 5,000 sets were produced and 100% complete set such as this is now very hard to find.
Artists contributing/performing tracks include:
The Grateful Dead, Brinsley Schwarz, Mighty Baby, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Pete Townshend, Hawkwind, Skin Alley, Daevid Allen & Going, Pink Faries & The Edgar Broughton Band.
Many of the tracks on this set were exclusive or alternate versions of released tracks. For example, David Bowie's 'Superman' is an alternate version recorded on 12 November 1971 during sessions for Ziggy Stardust. 'Silver Machine' by Hawkwind is the original un-mixed version of the classic performance.
Along with all the great music comes a generous collection of inserts:
- 32-page booklet detailing all aspects of 'Glastonbury Life'
- Fold-out poster detaling all the music used with photos of artists.
- 'Dome Sweet Dome' poster designed to make your own '2V Triacon 1/2 Sphere'
- Silver/black 'Make Your Own Pyramid' kit.
Each of the UK-pressed discs are on the green, red & yellow Revelation label: Rev 1/2/3
'BOBIL' is hand-etched into the side 1run-out.
Vinyl weights: 1. 137g 2. 137g 3. 135g
All discs are inside their original white inners
Everything is housed within a 6-panel, fold-out cover which is contained by its original clear printed outer sleeve.CONDITION
Discs
Labels: NEAR MINT
All are clean & unblemished with no more than 2/3 well-aimed spindle trails around each unworn centre hole.
Visual: NEAR MINT
Each playing surface is 'as new'. Apart from a few light scuffs on side 4 all are totally unmarked in strong daylight. Even closer examination beneath halogen light reveals nothing more than a sparkling rainbow shine. All discs lie 100% flat on the turntable when playing.
Sound Quality: EXCELLENT +
These discs have clearly been barely played and there is no trace of any groove/playwear distortion anywhere. There is a little vinyl background on discs 1 & 2 but certainly no clicks, pops, jumps or any other audible distractions on this incredible set.
Inserts: NEAR MINT/EXCELLENT
The booklet and two posters are in perfect condition. The pyramid flat has a few small handling wrinkles but is of course unmade.
Fully intact but with general handling wear and creasing to the corners. It appears that the cover has been attached to a wall at some point as there is dried adhesive to the corners. However this has not resulted in any missing paper and there are no tears or writing anywhere.
Outer Cover: EXCELLENT
Clean and with all of the delicate black print still present.
