Baron Elmo Enterprises proudly presents a stunning vinyl rarity from Europe’s finest large scale free jazz ensemble, the Globe Unity Orchestra… their very first lp, released under the name of the session leader, pianist ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH: Globe Unity, a German import lp released on the Saba label in 1966. This record captures a two massive slabs of avant-jazz/new music that will wreck your head like nobody’s business. Assembled by Von Schlippenbach for a one-shot performance of his first large ensemble piece for the Berliner Jazztage, the original 19-piece orchestra combined saxophonist Peter Brotzmann's trio and trumpeter Manfred Schoof's quintet with a phalanx of German free jazzers, including such heavyweights as Willem Breuker, Peter Kowald and Albert Mangelsdorff. The resulting show was, and I quote, “a historic and rousingly cacophonous success,” so the decision was made to keep the Globe Unity a viable if sporadically performing group, and into the studio they went with a slightly scaled-down version of the original ensemble to cut this lp. Von Schlippenbach served as its musical director of the constantly shifting group for most of the next two decades of its existence… and this amazing lp is where it all began. A glance at the lineup of Globe Unity should tell advanced-class jazzers everything they need to know about the greatness on display here: Alex Von Schlippenbach (conductor, piano, rohrenglocken, tam-tam, gongs), Peter Brotzmann (alto sax, gurke), Manfred Schoof (cornet, fluegelhorn, triangle), Willem Breuker (baritone sax, soprano sax, ratsche), Gunter Hampel (bass clarinet, flute, pandiera), Peter Kowald (bass, bells), Mani Neumeier (drums, tam-tam, gongs, woodblocks, tabla, "mani-tom"), Gerd Dudek (tenor sax, duck call), Buschi Niebergall (bass, siren), Claude Deron (trumpet, lotus-flute), Willi Lietzmann (tuba, maracas), Kris Wanders (baritone sax, alto sax, zorna, lotus-flute), Karl Berger (vibraphone), and, interestingly enough, future Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit (drums, kettledrums, temple blocks, darbuka). Most of the unusual instruments listed above are only deployed in the Side Two track, "Sun." This is a marvellous album that will dazzle avant-jazz devotees and explorers of bold, audacious sounds in general. Globe Unity has been unavailable on vinyl for decades, and has never been released on compact disc. Both the record and the gorgeous gatefold jacket show moderate wear, but this lp looks great and plays beautifully.
