Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and very rare 6 LP box set – a superb collector's copy – from Spanish Decca (13BB 207-212, Spanish pressing, red/silver FFSS NB labels, stereo, full-size 12-page booklet included) features Szymon Goldberg's peerless cycle of Mozart's Sonatas for Violin and Piano – recorded with pianist Radu Lupu in the fabled acoustics of London's Kingsway Hall during February, May, and September 1974 (producer: Christopher Raeburn / engineer: Philip Wade) – a set that remains a wonderful landmark in the Mozart discography and which the likes of even Itzakh Perlman and Anne-Sophie Mutter have failed to surpass.

Included are the following works of Mozart:

Violin Sonata in C Major K. 296

Violin Sonata in G Major K. 301

Violin Sonata in E-flat Major K. 302

Violin Sonata in C Major K. 303

Violin Sonata in E minor K. 304

Violin Sonata in A Major K. 305

Violin Sonata in D Major K. 306

Violin Sonata in F Major K. 376

Violin Sonata in F Major K. 377

Violin Sonata in G-flat Major K. 378

Violin Sonata in G Major K. 379

Violin Sonata in E-flat Major K. 380

Violin Sonata in G-flat Major K. 454

Violin Sonata in E-flat Major K. 481

Violin Sonata in A Major K. 526

Violin Sonata in F Major K. 547

There is a warmness, purity and sparkle to Goldberg's playing that is utterly captivating and Lupu matches the consumate artistry of his partner, bar for bar, each inspiring the other. How refreshing to have a true partnership of equals, the two instruments perfectly balanced, the violin not overspotlit, which so often spoils such recordings.

Needless to say, the recording is of Decca's finest analog quality and these performances have never sounded more beautiful than here, lacking the 'edge' their CD incarnations suffer from. Not only among Goldberg and Lupu's finest recordings, but among the great Mozart recordings ever set down for posterity – a cherishable, wonderful set.

Included is the full-size, 8-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by Marius Flothus (provided in Spanish only), photographs of Goldberg and Lupu, portraits of Mozart, and a reproduction of the autograph score.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is near-MINT. I suppose the box shows some extremely minor evidence of aging, but really there are no flaws to speak of, and the box appears almost as new. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, fraying, owners' markings or other defects. Indeed, the box can stand upright on its own without falling over or having the LPs spill out and it remains extremely solid, bright, and glossy, and very attractive – overall, a quite lovely collector's copy.

The condition of the full-size, 8-page booklet is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of: the pages remains bright and crisp, are free of any markings or bends, and the binding is perfect – a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the 6 LPs is near-MINT throughout. They retain a high gloss and playback is superb – overall, these rate as very fine collector's copies.
