Description
The Gorehounds - "The Big Spud E.P." Double 12-Inch Vinyl EP.
Two different Original 1987 3-track UK 12-Inch Test Pressings for the Gorehounds' debut Idol Records release.
This appears to be a normal "Big Spud EP" 12-Inch sleeve... but what's inside is definitely not a normal "Big Spud EP" 12-Inch !
This is a set of 2 different Damont Test Pressings for the EP, plus various pieces of Centre label artwork (including 2 sets of finished labels for approval).
Each Test Pressing is inside a white paper sleeve, with the Matrix Number/Stamper and Date handwritten on the outside. (It's not 100% clear whether the "Date" is the Recording Date, Mixing Date or Cutting/Pressing Date - my guess would be the Cutting or Pressing Date).
The two Test Pressings have different B-side runouts.
Dated 4/3/87, "12 ID 1 A"
Side A - "SUAS PO TH-TIN" / "12 ID 1 A-1" / "A PORKY PRIME CUT" / "DAMONT"
Side B - "FOR AUNT KITTY, NEIL, ALISON AND THE TERRIBLE TWINS CATHY & GAVIN" / "DAMONT" / "12 ID 1 B1"
Dated 24/3/87, "12 ID 1 A1 B2"
Side A - "SUAS PO TH-TIN" / "12 ID 1 A-1" / "A PORKY PRIME CUT" / "DAMONT"
Side B - (in different, clearer hand-etching) "FOR AUNT KITTY, NEIL, ALISON, AND THE TERRIBLE TWINS CATHY & GAVIN" / "12 ID 1 B2" / "MT. 1" / and a "pennant" emblem instead of "Damont".
There are also 2 finished A-side labels, and 2 finished B-side labels (presumably for approval prior to the initial commercial pressing run). These have the same Pink base label as used on the commercial release.
Also present is the "Proof artwork" transparency for the overprint of the base label (attached to a Black base label template), and an alternate label design example with a white "base label" template.
... and the music? - The Gorehounds were a great Irish rock band with a raucous JAMC/Cramps "hellbilly" sort of sound ("heavily influenced by The Cramps", according to their main tribute website, www.thegoldenhorde.org). This is their debut release.
"Ruby" is a storming, primal, guitar-driven gallop through the well-known "Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town)" number (as made famous by Kenny Rogers) - and is BY FAR the best version of this song ever IMHO.... The Jesus And Mary Chain would have killed for this early in their career...
Here's what a local Irish Magazine ("In Dublin") said about it at the time (from www.thegoldenhorde.com), and is pretty much spot on :-
"This leaps out of the speakers at you like a demented axe murderer on the loose. A toxic brew of paint stripper, fire water and a chainsaw on full revs. Brimming over with angst, anger and frustrated passion, it will have Kenny Rogers turning over in his Jacuzzi. Magnificent."
