Description
This is an original 1971 United States White Label Promotional pressing of Graham Nash’s brilliant solo debut album, Songs for Beginners. Distributed strictly to AM radio stations and choice DJs, this limited release represents the only official domestic mono pressing of the record. With standard retail copies distributed exclusively in stereo, this dedicated mono mix stands as an exceptionally rare, highly prized artifact for folk-rock collectors and audiophiles alike.
Following his temporary departure from the complex dynamics of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Graham Nash recorded Songs for Beginners as an deeply personal, raw, and politically charged artistic statement. Featuring an all-star backing lineup that included David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Rita Coolidge, and Neil Young (under a pseudonym), the album yielded timeless anthems like "Chicago" and "Military Madness."
By 1971, the commercial market had completely transitioned to stereo, leaving mono production exclusively to high-priority promotional runs tailored for single-channel AM radio transmitters. Atlantic Records pressed a minimal quantity of these black-on-white "Sample Copy — Not For Sale" LPs. The specialized mono mix brings Nash's intimate acoustic arrangements, crisp vocals, and heartfelt lyrical delivery directly to the front of the mix, blending the guest instrumentation with a punchy, warm mid-range cohesion absent from the standard stereo landscape.
