Description
I am auctioning off selected items from my personal collection of top-drawer LPs. Here we have Grant Green’s I Want to Hold Your Hand, an original mono copy of Blue Note 4202, a gem recorded March 31, 1965 with an ace band: Green, guitar; Hank Mobley, tenor saxophone; Larry Young, organ; and Elvin Jones, drums. The basic trio of Green, Young, and Jones play with surging swing and remarkable empathy, seeming to know where each member is going before he goes there. Mobley adds his distinctive sound and keen improvisational gifts to this vital mix. “Corcovado,” “Stella by Starlight,” and the title track – a neat arrangement of the Beatles’ hit – are three of the winning numbers.
This is another session in the legendary Blue Note modern jazz vein that, as recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in his Hackensack, NJ studio, has the vibrant feel of a live date. It’s like the band is right there in your room.
The record has been cleaned on a VPI Record cleaner and is graded after being played as follows:
Vinyl: M-
Vinyl has nearly its original luster, has clearly not been played much at all, and plays like new except for a very few surface crackles. A listener wanting a high quality version of this LP will not be disappointed.
Cover: VG++
The non-laminated – therefore not super shiny, not to be confused with advanced aging and wear – front cover has a bit of ring wear, which somewhat darkens the type above the graphic, and slight seam wear at the bottom right, but otherwise looks close to new. The back has a number written in felt marker, a name above the catalog number in pen, and some very slight paper deterioration in the right rear of the panel. Otherwise, there are no flaws: spine intact with printing, no tears, nice looking jacket. Jacket bears the Blue Note, Inc. address 43 W. 61st, New York 23
Labels: both sides have labels that are bright and clean without marks. The printed address is the New York USA, with Blue Note Inc. name. There is a Plastylite ‘p’ or ‘ear’ in dead wax, along with Van Gelder’s stamped name.
The combination of these factors makes this a solid original edition addition to your Blue Note collection,
(All aspects of cover notation and LP markings are stated as being original by Fred Cohen, in his landmark book on Blue Note original pressings, “Blue Note Records: A Guide to Identifying Original Pressings –Jazz Record Center Books.)
