In the beginning, there was a groovy West Coast sound, freestyle dancing, acid tests, and the cultural roadmap to a darker psychedelia that lurked around the next corner. The Grateful Dead’s self-titled debut LP is the pivotal soundtrack that ushered in the transition— a singularity, if you will. My offering is an early copy of that first album, and a time capsule back to the moment that our western world transformed forever. Despite three superficial contact lines visible, this copy plays cleanly and naturally, with minimal, faint pops heard mainly on Good Morning Little School Girl. With super-juicy fidelity, and delivering auditory details that I’m just not hearing on stereo versions or digital remasters, this monophonic pressing offers a rare opportunity for the audiophile in you to grab a sonic glimpse of that coveted, lost-to-history, period sound at its most authentic. Other than gentle shelf wear, two inches of paper chaffing on the lower seam, and some handwriting on the inner commercial sleeve, I would consider the packaging to be uncommonly clean, even glossy on the front, always carefully preserved in a protective sleeve during the decades that I’ve owned it. Give this one a spin, and clue the kiddies in to a sound they may never otherwise encounter in their bleak sea of modern synthetic tuneage. Shipped to you in supremely protective packaging.
