The Grateful Dead took to the start of the 1970s as a different albeit equally thrilling and eminently broader-reaching band than the ensemble that revolutionized psychedelia in the late 1960s. Made evident in the back-to-back studio releases Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, the group increased its mastery of harmony-driven roots songs distinguished by catchy signatures, more concise arrangements, and impossibly organic textures. Captured live in spring 1971 and featuring not a single repeated song from Live/Dead, the expressive performances on Skull & Roses document this stylistic expansion in unsurpassed fashion. The double-LP constitutes the no-limits sound of an iconic band coming in to its own.


Grateful Dead è il settimo album dei Grateful Dead, pubblicato nel mese di Ottobre del 1971, per la Warner Bros. Records catalogo 2WS-1935. E'il loro secondo doppio album dal vivo, e anche noto con i nomi di "Skull and Roses" (a causa della sua ironica copertina) e Skullfuck (il nome che in origine la band avrebbe voluto dare all'album, ma che è stato respinto dalla casa discografica) .Grateful Dead è stato il primo album del gruppo ad essere certificato disco d'oro dalla RIAA.


Grateful Dead is the seventh album by the Grateful Dead, released in October 1971 on Warner Bros. Records, catalogue 2WS-1935. It is their second live double album, and also known generally by the names Skull and Roses (due to its iconic cover art) and Skull Fuck (the name the band originally wanted to give to the album, which was rejected by the record company). It was the group's first album to be certified gold by RIAA.

I Grateful Dead sono stati un gruppo musicale Rock statunitense attivo dal 1965 al 1995. Furono tra gli artisti chiave della cosiddetta Summer of Love.Nati alla metà degli anni sessanta,e precisamente nel 1965, furono fra gli artisti fondamentali della storia di quello che veniva allora chiamato acid rock o rock psichedelico. Divennero celebri per il loro stile eclettico, che univa elementi di rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, country e jazz. Le loro interpretazioni Live erano caratterizzate da interminabili e lisergiche improvvisazioni modali. Attorno ai Grateful Dead nacque una sorta di culto; alcuni loro fan, chiamati Deadhead, seguirono il gruppo in concerto per anni, vivendo di fatto come nomadi in onore della loro devozione verso "the Dead".Raggiunsero la fama verso la fine degli anni 60', per poi arrivare all'apice del successo con album come Live/Dead, Workingman's Dead e American Beauty. La rivista Rolling Stone li inserisce al cinquantasettesimo posto nella lista dei 100 grandi artisti.
